DYSMENORRHEA (PERIOD CRAMPS) TREATMENT
DYSMENORRHEA TREATMENT
“Dysmenorrhea” is the medical term for painful periods (menstruation) or menstrual cramps. In addition to cramping, you might have other symptoms, such as nausea, fatigue and diarrhea. It’s most common to have menstrual cramps the day before or the day you start your period. For most people, symptoms subside after about two or three days.
Mild to moderate menstrual cramping is normal. But some people have such severe pain during their period that it interferes with their day-to-day life and prevents them from doing things they enjoy. Medication and other treatments like acupuncture can help with painful periods.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture helps manage symptoms of painful periods. Usually, women take painkillers to ease painful periods, ranging from mild to more severe. Placing acupuncture needles to its designated points in your body may help ease discomfort and reduce menstrual pain.
USING ACUPUNCTURE TO TREAT PERIOD CRAMPS (DYSMENORRHEA)
Period pain (dysmenorrhea) is a debilitating condition for many women, particularly younger women. There is good evidence to show that acupuncture is very effective for reducing the intensity of menstrual cramps and the length of time the pain is experienced. Unlike painkillers it doesn’t just treat the symptoms as they occur, but has an effect to lessen period pain for future cycles.
In acupuncture, stimulating certain points in the body with fine needles helps restore the flow of qi (life force or energy) and bring balance back to the body. Taking painkillers and covering the abdomen with a heating pad are the most common methods to reduce discomfort during menstruation.
For a more natural approach, acupuncture can be ideal. It only requires acupuncture needles and a licensed acupuncturist like Dr. Annie Yang 杨 to do the treatment for you!

HISTORY OF ACUPUNCTURE
The ancient practice of acupuncture started in China approximately 3000 years ago. The first documentation of acupuncture that described it as an organized system of diagnosis and treatment is in The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, which dates back to 100 BCE
With the rising popularity of acupuncture throughout Asia, it spread to many other regions and by the 6th century C.E., acupuncture had spread to Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese cultures and then out West. From there, acupuncture has made its way through the centuries and has been on the rise in the U.S. since the 1970’s.
