Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) occurs due to an imbalance in the levels of estrogen and progesterone levels in your body. PMS occurs a week before your periods is due and can cause at least 150 different symptoms. Women’s health primarily refers to the issues related to the menstrual cycle (including menopause), infertility, and issues during pregnancy/postpartum.
In this blog, we will focus on the benefits and effects of acupuncture for premenstrual symptoms and how it can help women's health.
In Chinese medicine, the menstrual cycle is an important indicator of general and reproductive health. It gives a great deal of information about the status of various physiological processes in the body. Regulating the menstrual cycle using acupuncture and Chinese medicine is often at the center of treatment for many chronic health conditions and for treating fertility issues. A healthy menstrual cycle is a sign of overall health.
Researches have shown that acupuncture is very effective in treating premenstrual symptoms or PMS. In one study it was found that acupuncture could cure the symptoms of PMS in almost 78% of the women who had participated in that study. The treatment of acupuncture had been able to alleviate cramps, nausea, headaches, anxiety, and insomnia.
Acupuncture works on many levels, including regulating the nervous system, which in turn regulates numerous physiological processes. In the case of women’s health, acupuncture has been shown to regulate uterine and ovarian blood flow via its effect on the ovarian sympathetic nerves.
Depending on the severity of your symptoms you will most probably be treated once a month a week before the onset of your periods. Treating premenstrual symptoms with acupuncture will help correct mood swings and do away with any pain. Below are some of the body parts where acupuncture is done to relieve PMS:
ABDOMEN
The first and the most important area of treatment is the abdomen. Two and four fingers width below the navel are the two most crucial points for treatment. A pair of points on both ends of the pelvic area where the legs join the body are also important. Another pair of points right below these points is the last area of treatment in the abdominal region.
Acupuncture at these points will help treat all menstrual abdominal discomforts, bloating, gas, cramps, headache, irregular menstrual periods and any other discomfort related to menstruation.
BACK
The bony area between the hipbone and the buttocks should be the first point of acupuncture treatment for PMS. The treatment of the sacral points at the base of your pelvis also helps in relieving PMS discomfort. The uterus gets very relaxed if these points are concentrated on. These points will help relieve menstrual cramps, lower back pain, hip pain, and pelvic pain.
ARMS AND LEGS
Applying acupuncture needles on the fleshy area between the thumb and the forefinger will help in treating headache and abdominal pain, and also normalize any delayed or irregular periods. On the legs, we also apply acupuncture needles on the insteps of both your feet for relief from PMS.
Oftentimes, stress underlies many health conditions. Research has shown that there is a link between reproductive health and stress via endogenous opioid peptides. Acupuncture stimulates the release of neurotransmitters which can then influence the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and fertility. It also helps lower stress hormones which may have positive effects on the menstrual cycle, PMS symptoms, and fertility.
